Abstract

Sinusitis is an acute or chronic inflammation of the paranasal sinuses, sustained by infective process- es developed on the mucosa. In some specific forms, it may cause severe impairment of the local response to medical and dental therapies. Maxillary sinusitis is a challenging pathology affecting the good results after oral implantology procedures (1).
Recently, several authors have studied the main pathways of sinusitis, trying to understand the over- all mechanisms leading to hypertrophy and tissue loss around the sinus membrane. The high number of co-factors able to influence the local environment is worthy of investigation as they trigger the behaviour of different cell populations (2-5), such as local and systemic factors leading to oxidative stress (6-9), in- fection (10), oncogenic factors (11) or systemic and syndromic diseases (12).
